This position will also be responsible for acting as a technical consultant to internal staff and outside vendors in order to plan and install network and related equipment and cabling systems to satisfy business needs.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities Install and administer network infrastructure in coordination with IT personnel or outside vendors.
Monitor and maintain network performance and capacity after modifications and updates.
Monitor and analyze log data.
Investigate, resolve, and analyze problems with performance and response time for network infrastructure.
Investigate, resolve, and analyze network outages and prepare analysis and remediation plans.
Provide solutions that will accommodate emerging technologies and future capacity needs.
Determine future capacity requirements and prepare budgetary documentation for future requests.
Participate in needs-analysis and requirements definitions with other City personnel to determine project scope.
Assess user needs in order to perform necessary upgrades to hardware and software.
Consult with service providers on leased line and wide area communications projects.
Maintain network security through securing the network infrastructure from physical and electronic threats.
Maintain appropriate vendor certifications.
Provide training to lower level staff.
Minimum Qualifications Four-year college degree, formal technical training or a combination of college and training.
Cisco CCNA Certification (current) Five years related experience in a Microsoft Windows environment with 5 or more physical locations, 1,000 or more users and 150 or more servers Or an equivalent combination of education and experience sufficient to successfully perform the essential functions of the job.
Preferred Qualifications Education/ Experience: Four-year college degree in Business, Information Technology, Computer Science or related field of study Cisco CCNP Certification and / or Cisco CCIE Storage Networking Certification Microsoft Certified Systems Engineer (MCSE) and / or Microsoft Certified Systems Administrator (MCSA) More than five years of experience installing, managing and optimizing LAN and WAN networks in a Microsoft Windows environment with five or more physical locations, 1,000 or more users and 150 or more servers.
Knowledge, Skills & Abilities: 5-8 years in providing technical operation support and service delivery in Data Network 2 years’ experience as a Tier3 network engineer Wide experience with Cisco and F5 technologies Comprehensive knowledge of network protocols including TCP/IP, VLAN, BGP, EIGRP, OSPF, 802.
1x Ability to install, configure and manage Cisco Routers and Switches Ability to install, configure and manage fiber channel infrastructure Ability to manage and monitor vendor hardware and software network acquisitions Comprehensive knowledge of acquisition and installation of network security software and ability to conduct intrusion testing Comprehensive knowledge of the major components of network and server infrastructure - hardware, software, cabling systems Thorough understanding of Microsoft Windows desktop and server operating systems Ability to communicate with users to define system requirements and resolve problems Licenses and Certifications Cisco Certified Network Administrator (CCNA) An industry recognized security certification preferred Valid Class C Texas Driver's license Physical Requirements / Work Environment The office environment is typical; the employee should expect occasional exposure to unpleasant environmental conditions and/or hazards.
The position requires that the employee be able to lift 30 pounds, work in close / cramped areas, work in dusty conditions, work in low-light conditions and be able to sit, stand, kneel, crouch and bend for brief periods of time.
The position requires that the employee be able to work while standing on a ladder or other appropriate device to elevate the employee to the level of the work.
The employee must be able to use fingers to feel and have sufficient dexterity to sort and hold small wires, connect punch-downs and install small connectors into sockets.
The employee must be able to discern a broad spectrum of colors used in network cable.
