Chip seal is a type of pavement surface treatment that involves the application of a layer of small aggregates or chips to the surface of an existing pavement followed by the application of a layer of liquid asphalt or emulsion.
The chips are then compacted into the surface using a roller.
This process is also known as tar and chip or seal coating.
The purpose of chip sealing is to improve the durability and skid resistance of the pavement surface, as well as to protect it from water damage and UV rays.
It is commonly used on low-volume roads and residential streets.
